UFC 118 Preview: Edger Vs Penn
2021-08-23
After the shocking outcome of the last UFC 112 championship UFC betting world is in lurch and amazed whether to place their bet on Penn, eight time UFC world champion or on Edgar, who defeated Penn in last UFC 112 event in April. The line at www.here has Penn as the current favorite at -300.
Penn started his Brazilain Jiu Jitsu training under Ralph Garcie at the age of 17. Soon after entering into the World Jiu Jitsu championship he won black belt from Andrea Pederneiras and then bagged the gold medal from the World Jiu Jitsu championships in Rio de Janeiro with such an unbelievable speed that the Jiu Jitsu was given the nickname, The Prodigy.
Penn is a trained MMA fighter. His strength and striking skills are enough for giving tough time to his opponents. He is blessed with unbelievable submission skills and legendary flexibility that gives him the intensity to translate his defeat into win in a flash of seconds.
Penn possesses solid wrestling skills, takedown defense and excellent overall boxing qualities. His hands are electric fast and hits very hard.
On the otherhand, Penn’s UFC 118 opponent, Frankie Edgar, cannot be considered less than Penn in any comparison. Frankie Edgar had proved that he is a tough competition for Penn by defeating Penn in UFC 112 championship in April 2010.
Frankie Edgar is the reigning UFC lightweight champion and purple belt holder in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He had a record of eight undefeated streak of fights at a stretch.
Edgar too possesses excellent takedown defense and ground control skills. He is technically a very sound boxer with high speed and toughness.
The UFC 118 world championship will only decide whether winning of Edgar was fluke or he is the UFC’s new champion or the Prodigy would save his title and continue to rule the world of UFC.
Let’s proceed towards the second set of players Randy Couture Vs. James Toney who will participate in the main card UFC 118 round. Both these players are in their forties and are from different types of games i.e. Randy Couture is the boxing champion and James Toney is an MMA champion.
Though a UFC bout between two forty-year’s olds seems to be very uninteresting and very sluggish but these are not any ordinary forty-year’s old players these are the big names of their respective fields.
The opening match will be played between Marcus Davis and Nate Diaz.
Marcus Davis is known as the ‘Irish Hand Grenade’ who had exploded against Jonathan Goulet at UFC 113 on May8. Davis scored a technical knockout finish and snapped a rare two-fight losing skid.
On the other hand, Davis’s opponent Diaz played impressively in his 117lb debut against Rory Markham and would try to establish himself in this category by defeating Davis.
The largest and most popular brand in mixed martial arts contest organizers is UFC. The organization has devoted much time and monetary assets to promote the fighters and their talent. According to their popularity, the fighters are ranked on top ten charts.
Wanderlei Silva, popularly known as ‘The Axe Murderer’ comes at position ten. He has played in Japan, Brazil, and United States.
Then comes the ‘Ultimate Fighter’ or Forrest Griffin who is former light heavy weight champion. His magnetism and techniques have won crowds. He is identified as charmer after winning the title of ‘Ultimate Fighter’ among his admirers.
Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson comes at eighth position. Being the former UFC light heavyweight champion, he is adored for his remarkable fighting spirit. Frank Mir is at position seven and is the former UFC heavy weight champion. He is scheduled to compete against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, who also is a former UFC heavyweight champion, in the upcoming UFC 119 fight.
B.J. Penn comes in at rank six and is the former UFC welterweight and light weight champion. He is famous for maintaining a winning attitude in the previous fights and also for building up excitement in his fights. A big propaganda was created he accused St. Pierre of using vaseline in the UFC 94 event. His next fight the UFC 118 is against Frankie Edgar on August 27 in United States.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida holds position five in the popularity charts. He is the former UFC light heavyweight champion and showed his fighting skills in the match where he defeated the existing light heavyweight champion Mauricio ‘Shogun‘ Rua.
Gaining position four on the popularity charts in the mixed martial art fighting events is the indispensable Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell. He is the most sought after light heavyweight champion in the fighting world. Be it on the internet or live shows, he has gained the same token of popularity among fans. He is already aged to retire from the sport but his enthusiasm is not hampered at all. He is all the more charismatic on the fighting front as was always.
On the third position comes the present UFC middleweight champion Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva. Though he is the leading star in the world of UFC, he was blamed with anti-sportsmen behavior in Abu Dhabi event opposite Demian Maia. Silva is a long time favorite of UFC betting fans.
On position second is the proud UFC Welterweight champion, Georges "Rush" St. Pierre. He is the prevailing foremost champion in UFC fights and the key player in welterweight category. Though St. Pierre is very famous and adored by fans, the accusation of using Vaseline, to win the title of UFC 94, has stained his profile. He will be fighting with Josh Koscheck in UFC 124 during December this year.
Topping the charts is UFC heavy weight champion Brock Lesnar. He has made his mark in a very short span in MMA fighting world. He was a former WWE champion before entering UFC fights. He showed his remarkable willpower and drive for the sport when he played against Shane Carwin even on being seriously ailing due to diverticulitis, sever medical condition.

The two lightweights will make for an interesting fight on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Both are small, of course. Kurt Pellegrino, a native of New Jersey, measures in at just 5 foot 8 and 155 pounds. George Sotiropolous, a native of Australia, also weighs in at 155 pounds but owns a two-inch height advantage at 5 foot 10. The two are also similarly aged.
Sotiropolous, nicknamed “The Wizard of Oz”, has little training in wrestling but learned from some of the best MMA fighters in the field of Brazilian ju-jitsu, much to the joy of UFC betting.
Pellegrino, on the other hand, has an extensive wrestling background but is also trained in Brazilian ju-jitsu. The two are each fairly new to the world of UFC, as Pellegrino first fought for the UFC in UFC 61 but didn’t earn his first win until UFC 64, and Sotiropolous first fought for the UFC in an April 2008 Fight Night event in which he TKO’ed Roman Mitichyan.
Each of the two fighters’ overall MMA records are very solid, with Pellegrino holding a 21-4 overall record and Sotiropolous’ record a pristine 12-2.
They have never fought against each other, but the two fighters’ recent records can go a long way toward determining who should be expected to win this bout.
The thing is, they both have been very efficient in the Octagon of late. Since he beat Mitichyan in 2008, Sotiropolous has not lost a UFC bout, beating his last three opponents — George Roop, Jason Dent and Joe Stevenson.
Pellegrino has won his last four fights, dating back to September 2008. Two of those victories came by the same form of submission, a rear naked choke that has become a specialty of Pellegrino’s.
In Pellegrino’s ten-match UFC career, only three fights have gone the full final minutes — and he’s won two of them. Only one of Sotiropolous’ four bouts have gone the distance.
So what can you expect out of the fight when Sotiropolous and Pellegrino meet on July 3? Two things. One, Pellegrino will attempt to wrestle his way out of everything Sotiropolous attempts. He has proven — especially in his fight against Josh “The Dentist” Neer last year — that he can withstand damage and outlast fighters, even when his effort is questionable as it was during that fight. And two, Sotiropolous will attempt just about everything, as he typically does in his bouts. The Australian fighter is just about as well-rounded as they come in UFC, and if past fights mean anything, it’s likely he will be able to find something that neutralizes Pellegrino’s wrestling and ju-jitsu focus.
Essentially, expect the two fighters to be abnormally well-prepared to face each other, and expect Pellegrino to do his best to outsmart Sotiropolous, but Sotiropolous may just be the favorite because of his ability to pull a variety of moves out of his bag of tricks.

The long awaited fight between Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama is all set to happen. If the recent reports are to be believed these two fighters would be in the ring facing each other for UFC 116 on July 3. Still now there was only rumors abbot the fight, but sources close to the situation has confirmed that an agreement has been signed upon to fight for UFC116 in Las Vegas.
These two fighters are pitched in the middle weight category and their fight is sure to give memorable experiences to the audiences all around the world. Wanderlei Silva (33-10-1 MMA, 3-5 UFC) is a veteran in this field but Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-1-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) is sure to give him a tough fight. And all UFC betting are keeping a close eye on this fight.
There were rumors that the fight was fixed for UFC 115, which was to be held in Vancouver, British Columbia on June 12th. But the officials have announced that the fight is fixed for UFC 116. There is no official confirmation but the fight is expected to take place in the MGM grand Garden Arena on July 3rd. The UFC 116 has already got into the news as Brock Lesnar who is the current heavyweight champion would be also in the ring. His opponent has still not been decided but there is much anticipation on the fight. Lesnar has a huge fan following and is the favorite for the fight.
Most bookies are betting high on Silva due to his recent performances. In his last fight, UFC 110 he had a unanimous victory over his opponent Michael Bisping. This victory has given high an upper hand on his scheduled fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama. Earlier there were some doubts raised on Silva’s performance and many even believed that he was not viable for a long term. In the UFC 92, Silva lost the fight 1-3 against Quinton “Rampage” Jackson much to the surprise of UFC betting fans everywhere.
The fight between Silva and Akiyama was first scheduled for UFC 110. Then the promotion thought that Bisping would be a better option for the fight to be held in Australia and axed Akiyama. This UFC 110 fight was the 33 year old Silva’s first after undergoing a surgery for the tissue damage done to his nose and face. Silva holds a record of five year without any loss in the PRIDE organization. This record stand still even now but his former team mate, Anderson Silva, who is the current middle weight champion has the chance to break his record since he has completed four years without any loss in the ring.
Akiyama is sure to give Silva a run for his money. The fighter made his debut in UFC on July last year in UFC 100 against Alan Belcher. He won the fight after a controversial split decision but was the clear winner from the view of the audience. In an interview on last February, Akiyamo had commented that he was very sad on the cancelled fight that was fixed with Silva and expected that he would get a chance to fight Silva in the near future. The fight between Silva and Akiyama was originally scheduled for UFC 115, but it was later postponed. Then promotion did announce that the fight would be a summer event.
Silva might be carrying huge experience behind him, but would have to bring his full power out as Akiyama would surely give him some good fight. Akiyama has technically not lost a fight since March 2005. Two of his most hyped fights against Kazushi Sakuraba and Kazuo Mizaki ended in a controversial “no contest” results.
